The United Nations is a living promise that despite our differences, we will solve problems together.




“Even in the rough seas of today, we can anchor our action in peace, dignity, and hope.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says that although our world is changing in ways that are often unsettling, those changes can help inspire a better future.

He calls for a recommitment to the principles that form the bedrock of international cooperation and multilateralism, stressing:

“The United Nations is a living promise that despite our differences, we will solve problems together. Let’s keep that promise. Let’s never give up.”

Multilateral cooperation has existed for as far back as we can remember. Some scholars see it as a foundation for the development of organized societies and trace its origins back to ancient times. Many civilizations left evidence of agreements to help regulate interactions (be it political, commercial or financial) between different entities . In its recognizable form, multilateralism developed in the course of negotiating the Westphalia treaties, which ended the Hundred Year War and the Thirty Year War in 1648.
